Dropwise to Host Free Holistic Pregnancy Tele-Summit May 21st-June 6th 2013

I’ve been on a bit of a hiatus from blogging since the end of 2012 as I’ve been super busy since the beginning of the year putting together an exciting new virtual event –The Holistic Pregnancy Tele-Summit: A Celebration of New & Vibrant Life.

Holistic Pregnancy Tele-SummitThis is a ground-breaking FREE tele-seminar series that brings together some of the foremost experts in natural self-care and childbirth to address the #1 fear most pregnant women have and reveal the secrets to delivering healthier, happier babies. This event is FREE for participants and consists of a series of 6 ground-breaking tele-calls (also accessible via the Web) delivered over the span of 3 weeks. I’ll be interviewing some of the foremost experts in natural childbirth to uncover the secrets for delivering healthier and happier babies. I’ll also be giving a presentation myself titled “How to Look and Feel Your Best Without Compromising Your Baby’s Health.”

The purpose of these calls is to help women better understand their childbirth options; teach them how to overcome the stress and fears common to pregnancy; transform their birth experience from one of fear and pain to one of joy and ecstasy; and transition into or embrace a holistic lifestyle prior to childbirth and beyond.

It starts next Tuesday, May 21st and runs through June 6th. If you or someone you know is pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or works with pregnant women then please share this link with them now: http://www.dropwise.info. This is where they can get all the details and register. Registration will remain open though 3PM June 6th (the date of our last call). Participants will have access to audio replays for a limited time after each call –in case they can’t make it to a particular call, but they have to register to get the details.

I’m really excited about this event. I’ve got some great speakers lined up and I’ll be posting more about them and the event in the coming days!

12 Health-Conscious, Eco-Conscious, & Socially-Conscious Holiday Gift Ideas

For many people, giving gifts, especially during the holidays, can seem like a chore. This is especially true if you’re driven to give from a place of  obligation rather than a place of sincere love and gratitude. If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of what appears to be a completely random gift that has little or no practical application or even any sentimental value, then you know what I mean.

The holiday season, with all its emphasis on consumption and shopping can sometimes feel like an empty exercise in crass commercialism. But gifts are an important way of expressing how we feel about others — it’s a way of showing our gratitude to and for them. And while our gift-shopping and gift-giving gyrations don’t always accurately reflect that intention, I believe that it’s still the driving force behind why most of us give gifts.

Generosity towards others is intrinsic to the heart. Giving usually starts with the people you’re closest to, but helping people you don’t know also has a very profound karmic effect too. If the whole holiday shopping thing leaves you feeling more like Mr. Scrooge or The Grinch than Santa’s little elf … take heart. It’s easy to transcend the superficial and unrewarding aspects of holiday shopping when you focus on giving conscious gifts. There are all sorts of “cool” and interesting gifts you can give that either add value to the recipients’ lives, provide a tangible benefit to a third party, offer intangible benefits for the collective good, and in some cases all three!

I’ve culled 12 of my favorite “conscious” gift ideas below –all excerpted from my new report “50 Conscious Gift Ideas for the Holidays & Beyond” (keep reading to find out how you can grab a copy of this for yourself and use it as a guide for all your gift-giving occasions). The report (and this list) are loosely organized into three categories: Health-Conscious Gifts (i.e. gifts that support people’s needs or desires to be more healthy and fit); Eco-Conscious Gifts (i.e. gifts that promote Green lifestyle choices that have a positive impact on the environment by reducing consumption and waste or conserving energy and natural resources; and Socially Conscious Gifts (gifts that support the work of a variety of organizations in promoting social and economic justice, or environmental and wildlife preservation). I guarantee you that if you choose any of the unique items from this list or the report (or similar items), it will transform the way you look at gift-giving and turn it into a win-win situation every time!

Health-Conscious Gifts

1. Meditation/Hypnosis Audios

Reading books is a great way to keep your mind sharp but so many of us find it difficult to carve out the time to do it on a consistent basis –that’s where audio books, meditation, and even subliminal audios can make a big difference in someone’s life. When it comes to success, we all have habits we’d like to change or get rid of that keep us from achieving our goals and desires –especially when it comes to health and fitness.

If you have someone on your list that is struggling to achieve a goal, then a subliminal audio or meditation that supports them in moving forward would make a great gift! Two of my favorite sources for these types of audios are: www.mindperks.com and www.brainsync.com

2. A High Quality Juicer/Blender

Having healthy tools in the kitchen makes it a lot easier to be healthy. Ever since I successfully completed the Fat Flush Plan diet, protein smoothies and juicing or blending greens have become a daily staple for me. A couple of years ago, I broke down and invested in a High Tec Blender (the same one that’s used by Jamba Juice) and I won’t lie … it was darn expensive! But it’s so easy to work with, can liquefy almost anything in seconds, and super easy to clean up afterwards. It can be used as a juicer (though it won’t filter out the pulp) AND a food processor and it’s safe to use if you want to make your own nut milks.

This is one of the best investments anyone can make to support themselves or their loved ones in adding a healthy dose of fruits and veggies to their daily routines!

VitaMix is the top of the line in this arena (and hands down the most expensive). While I know a few die-hard people who swear by their VitaMix, I have to say I’m VERY happy with my BlendTec which more than meets my needs and was about $100 less than the VitaMix!

If you don’t have the budget for this type of gift, I suggest the Magic Bullet system. This is especially great for people who travel a lot and have an even harder time getting their fresh fruit and veggie fix when they’re on the road!

3. Subscription to a CSA Farm Delivery Program

Instead of putting your money into a big basket of attractive but unhealthy goodies or one of those expensive fruit of the month type programs, you can give a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) subscription to someone who wants to eat healthy and consciously. Your giftee will receive a box of fresh, local produce delivered weekly during the growing season that also supports their (and possibly your) local family-owned farms. The cost varies depending on the type of subscription you purchase. If it’s a little too costly, consider going in on this gift with several people. Check out LocalHarvest.com to get more info about CSA’s and to locate CSA farms near you or your giftee!

4. Sore Muscle Soother (Warm Wearable Goods)

Another awesome group of products that I can’t live without! I’ve tried a lot of microwaveable herb filled neck and shoulder pillows over the years but none have held up and provided the level of comfort that WarmGoods® have.

Whether you need fast relief from aches and pains or you just want to enjoy the comfort of deep, long-lasting heat; WarmGoods® delivers it and does it in style! Premium fabrics (cotton and hemp), filling (flaxseed and organic herbs), and superior construction (channel stitching), create fluffy soft herbal wraps that can easily bend and twist to be applied or wrapped around almost any part of the body, and hold their heat for a long time.

5. Aromatherapy Handbook for Pregnant Women

Know someone who is pregnant or planning to be very soon? Give them a gift that will help them learn how to easily stay calm and sane during pregnancy and labor using essential oils in a way that naturally supports them without harming their baby. Gift them a copy of my new eBook: Aromatherapy & The Expectant Mom: A Woman’s Guide to the Best Essential Oils for a Holistic Pregnancy.  Every pregnancy is different but the one thing they all have in common is that the baby’s emotional health is directly affected by the mother’s emotional state of being. That’s why aromatherapy and essential oils are a key component of any holistic pregnancy, but you need to know which oils are okay to use and which are not. My eBook teaches which essential oils you can safely use to solve the top 5 most common problems pregnant women face, and the best ways to use them with confidence for a smooth transition into motherhood.

Eco-Conscious Gifts

6. Stainless Steel Water Bottles/ Commuter Mugs

Do your part to cut back on the 40 billion+ plastic water bottles of all shapes and sizes that end up in our landfills every year by switching to stainless steel bottles and making it easy for others to. Klean Kanteen was one of the first companies to produce a stainless steel water bottle. As they’ve grown, they’ve created a variety of sizes, shapes and colors to choose from. They are still my first choice when it comes to stainless steel water bottles! Find a variety of them here.

As for commuter/coffee mugs, I recently discovered the joys of a Contigo Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumbler. I tried so many different styles and brands but they all leaked and caused me a lot of trouble especially while driving in my car! I had just about given up on finding one that would work until I found this baby and now I’m never going back! You can also pick up a pair of these at Costco for slightly more than what you’d pay for one somewhere else. Or browse the collection at Amazon.

7. AA Rechargeable USB Cell Batteries or USB Charger

The gift that keeps on giving … this is a revolutionary new rechargeable battery – the USBCELL. An NiMH AA cell that can be used like a normal battery and can be recharged simply by plugging it into a USB port. With over 15 billion Alkaline batteries made and thrown away each year – wasting resources,  C02 and creating toxic Landfill – USBCELL offers a eco-friendly alternative that can be re-used hundreds of times as no charge adaptor or cable is needed, saving money, hassle and waste.

Alternatively, try the Rayovac USB Battery Charger that can use any USB computer or device to charge 2 AA or AAA NiMH or NiCD batteries.

Both offer a great and relatively inexpensive companion that adds value to any battery-operated gift. Hell, they would be a great gift by themselves for anyone who uses a lot of small battery-powered gadgets!

8. Envirosax Re-usable Fashion Forward Shopping Bags

You probably don’t need to be convinced of the value of re-usable shopping bags and totes. Everywhere you go these days, practically everyone is using them and every major retailer offers them as an alternative to non-recyclable environmentally damaging plastic bags..

Envirosax takes the concept to another level with their collection of fashion-forward, graphically hip, chic bags made of lightweight polyester. They’re portable, waterproof, and lightweight (weighing in at just 1.4 oz each), These groovy bags are available individually or as a series of 5 contained within a handy pouch. With reinforced seams, each surprisingly large bag can hold a weight the equivalent of two supermarket plastic bags

9. Smart Klean Laundry Ball

I can’t say enough about this product! Another seemingly unglamorous gift item, the Smart Klean Laundry Ball works astonishingly well! I’ve been using it for about a year now and it’s made doing laundry unbelievably easy! You just toss in your load with the ball and run your washer and VOILA! You get clean, fresh-smelling clothes without the hassle of having to measure liquid or powdered soap. That alone is worth the price tag!

One ball effectively washes 365 loads of laundry without using any soap or detergents which helps to conserve water and energy. The active components inside are derived from Earth minerals and are formulated to leave zero residues behind, making them safe for you and safe for the environment. And now the manufacturers of this nifty product have added a Stain Remover to their product line. I can’t wait to check that out! Find more on the environmental benefits of using this product here.

10. Sodastream Jet Starter Kit

Enjoy the freshness and convenience of homemade soda and protect the environment at the same time! The Sodastream is a table-top unit that allows you to use regular tap or filtered water to create your own carbonated water. It’s like the 21st century version of a soda king, but instead of using a lot of small whippets (which creates a lot of waste), it uses one large (refillable) whippet that can make between 60 to 180 liters of soda water (that’s somewhere between 15 and 45 gallons of the stuff!) depending on how fizzy you like your water.

If the fact that over 40 billion plastic water bottles of all shapes and sizes end up in our landfills every year troubles you, consider how much of a mitigating impact this product could have if every household had one and used it instead of buying sparkling water in plastic bottles!

With a Sodastream, there’s no need to haul heavy bottles, store them at home or throw them away. It’s simple to clean and reuse, and comes in a variety of colors and styles, making it easy to find a soda maker to match any decor. I’d skip the flavors that come with it as they have some questionable ingredients and just add a splash of your favorite juice to your glass of sparkling water. Find a selection of models and accessories here.

To date, Tom’s has given 2,000,000 pairs of new shoes to children in need around the world. Pretty impressive!

Reflections on The Tumultuous Fall of 2012

It’s amazing how much has happened since my last post. Wow! First there was the legendary performance of the San Francisco Giants leading up to and right through the World Series. Now I must confess that I don’t normally follow what’s going on in the sports world with more than a passing nod, but the excitement rippling through the city here during those 10+ days was so palpable that even I got swept up Giants fever and watched the most of the last 7 post-season games with some enthusiasm. Go Giants!

Then there was the gut-wrenching nightmare of Hurricane Sandy and its trail of devastation. Having grown up in New York City and lived in New Jersey for many years, it was difficult to watch the images of some of my favorite places destroyed by the ravages of Mother Nature and it brought back sad memories of Katrina. Our hearts go out to all the “Nor-Easters” who’ve been affected by this, many of whom are still struggling to get back on their feet. Here’s hoping for as speedy a recovery as possible.

And amidst all the hoopla and chaos, the long and dreary 2012 election season finally came to a spectacular close! All just in time to gather our wits, re-group, and turn our attention to the approaching holiday season. I’ve been busy working on a special report called “50 Conscious Gift Ideas for the Holidays & Beyond” to help put some of the joy back into holiday gift shopping and giving. Be sure to check back later this week for an excerpt from that report featuring 12 of my favorites that I just had to share with you! I’ll also share with you how you can grab a FREE copy of the entire report!

Smart Bombs and Tea Leaves: The Future of Breast Cancer Treatment

self breast examOctober is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the breast cancer world there’s always a lot of talk about “finding the cure.” I don’t know that it’s possible to find a cure for any type of cancer. I think that addressing cancer has to consist of a two-pronged approach: 1) Focusing on the causes so we can effectively engage in prevention and 2) Finding better (i.e. more effective and less devastating) treatment options for those who already have it. I firmly believe that prevention is the best long-term solution for significantly reducing the incidence of breast cancer (or any other type of cancer for that matter) and developing better tools and technology for early detection are also critical. There are many things we can do to lower our risk of developing cancer, but at the end of the day, if we’re not so lucky, having a wider range or treatment options would make a difficult situation a whole lot better and improve our odds of survival.

Despite all of the support and funding for breast cancer research and the advances in treatment achieved over the past 20 years, women diagnosed with breast cancer today still have limited and often devastating options for treatment. Depending on the type of breast cancer and the stage that it’s diagnosed at, women basically have three options: surgery to remove part or all of the breast, chemotherapy, or radiation –or some combination of these.

If you or someone you know has suffered through breast cancer treatment, then you know how hard it is on both the body and the mind. But there is a glimmer of hope that more and better treatment options are on the horizon. A number of recently concluded studies reveal new treatments for breast cancer with promising results.

The first study, sponsored by Genentech, tested a new treatment that targets and kills breast cancer cells while leaving healthy cells undamaged. Nearly 1,000 women with advanced breast cancer took part in the study, and according to researchers, the treatment stopped the progression of breast cancer for several months. This form of highly targeted treatment also appears to improve survival rates. Compared to another group who were given standard cancer treatment drugs, 20 percent more of the women involved in this study were still alive after two years.

This new treatment, called the T-DM1, is being dubbed “smart bomb” by researchers. Researchers combined Herceptin (the first gene-targeted therapy for breast cancer) with a chemotherapy that is normally too toxic to give on its own and another chemical that keeps the two substances bonded together until they reach a cancer cell. Once the cancer-killing cocktail comes in contact with a cancer cell, it releases the toxin to kill just the cancer cell.

The researchers in this study are confident that this double weapon will not be as damaging to the body as current treatments for breast cancer. Dr. Jennifer Ashton, an OB/Gyn and former medical correspondent for CBS News explains it like this: “Think of it like a heat-seeking missile with a nuclear warhead. So it travels around the body, does no damage until it meets the cancer, and then it deploys a massively toxic dose that wipes out [just] the cancer.”

While some of the women on T-DM1 showed signs of minor liver damage and low levels of blood clotting agents, most did not experience the usual problems of chemotherapy. The study’s leader, Dr. Kimberly Blackwell of Duke University added: “People don’t lose their hair, they don’t throw up. They don’t need nausea medicines, they don’t need transfusions.” You can view the ABC News story on this here.

Another study in England took a look at a more natural treatment approach for breast cancer. Scientists at Aston University in Birmingham and Russells Hall Hospital in Dudely examined the effects of a plant extract on cancer cells. The plant is called Virgin’s Mantle (Fagonia cretica) and it grows in the desert regions of Pakistan, India, Africa, and parts of Europe. It was chosen as the focus for this study because virgin’s mantle extracts are used to make medicinal tea in some of these places. In fact, a small hospital in Pakistan began using the herbal tea 40 years ago to treat breast cancer patients.

Though the treatment has long been regarded as folklore or placebo, the study found surprising results when the plant extract was combined with cancer cells in a lab. Tests showed that the extract stopped the growth of cancer cells within five hours and killed them off within twenty-four hours. Not surprisingly, women who take the tea report that there are no serious side effects –like those that result from conventional chemotherapy.

What causes the plant extract to be so effective? According to the researchers, the extract has a unique mechanism that can fix defects in the cell DNA that normally prevent tumor growth. When DNA is not properly functioning, cancer can flourish and even the effects of treatments such as chemo are less effective.

Researchers are quick to note that more research is needed to demonstrate if the plant extract is as effective at killing cancer in the body as it is in the lab and how it can be used to develop a new treatment drug.

There’s A Lot Of Room For Improvement In Early Breast Cancer Detection

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month and it’s been awhile since I’ve written anything on the subject so it seems like a good idea to re-visit it. If you’ve been following my posts here or are a subscriber of our Health & Beauty News ezine and have been reading it for some time you know that when it comes to cancer –which is often though not always, the end result of a prolonged state of imbalance or “dis-ease” in the body– I’m a passionate advocate for prevention.

We now know a hell of a lot more about the role of food and nutrition in preventing disease and the role that antioxidant-rich foods and nutrients play in protecting us from cancer. At the same time, there’s been a growing movement to create awareness and educate about the role of repeated toxic exposure in promoting the development of cancer –thanks in large part to the work of the Environmental Working Group and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. But there’s still a lot of work to be done in this critical area.

When it comes to breast cancer, there’s also a lot of room for improvement in the area of early and accurate detection. Thinking about some of my friends and loved ones who have faced (and thankfully survived) breast cancer, I wish that there had been better ways to detect the cancer much earlier so as to open the door to more treatment options with less devastating consequences. As I learned a couple of years ago while researching this subject, by the time a cancer tumor or growth is large enough to be detected by a mammogram, it has already been developing in the body for 7 or 8 years!!

I used to believe that until this aspect of breast cancer was drastically improved, women who are diagnosed would continue to be faced with limited and far less than ideal treatment options. But at last, there’s some good news to share on this! Some recently concluded studies are revealing promising new treatment approaches that, if they pan out, will at least offer some kinder, gentler treatment options. Stay tuned as I will share some of the results of these studies in an upcoming blog post.

Got a Blank Space Where My Mind Should Be: Can Aromatherapy Cure Memory Loss?

Some people are fond of saying that our memory is the first thing to go as we age. The conventional wisdom is that as we age, our memory inevitably gets worse. We just have to accept things like not remembering where we parked the car or forgetting a new person’s name within seconds of meeting them, as unavoidable signs of aging.

While most people will experience a decline in memory as they get older, there are some simple, natural things you can do give your brain a little “tune up” from time to time when you need some help remembering things. A number of recent studies have demonstrated that aromatherapy can stimulate positive significant change in all of the functions of the brain, from increasing mental focus to making people more likely to remember things.

One study conducted by the University of Northumbria in the UK observed the effects that different scents had on memory and mood. The study found that subjects who inhaled a peppermint aroma performed better on memory tests than subjects who inhaled a ylang ylang aroma, while those who were given the ylang ylang reported being calmer than the group that had received the peppermint. That’s because peppermint is one of the most well known aromatic stimulants. Now we know that in addition to its cooling, analgesic, and digestive properties, it can be used to improve mental performance too!

An earlier study conducted by the same University in 2003 used a different set of essential oils in order to measure their impact on memory and concentration. In this initial study, scientists had subjects work in rooms that were filled with either rosemary or lavender aromas. While both scents made subjects think longer about their answers to their memory test, those under the influence of lavender got more answers wrong. By contrast, those who were in the room filled with rosemary gave significantly more detailed and higher quality responses to their memory test questions.

This research clearly reveals some of the interesting and important benefits of using aromatherapy to aid in the area of memory and concentration, but even more astounding are the results of a recent study in Japan that measured the effect of aromatherapy on patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

The Japanese study examined the curative effects of aromatherapy on the behavior and cognitive function of 28 elderly patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The subjects received aromatherapy treatments twice a day for a full month. Rosemary and lemon essential oils were used in the morning treatments while lavender and orange essential oils were used in the evening treatments. They were given three different tests to evaluate how well they functioned both before and after the thirty day period. At the end of the month-long study, patients “showed significant improvement in personal orientation related to cognitive function,” and no side effects associated with the use of aromatherapy were noted.

Impressive as these results are, they are not as surprising as they may seem. The link between scent and memory is well-known, and has been for centuries. The parts of the brain that are associated with memory and feeling are all part of the limbic system, as is the olfactory bulb (the area of the brain that processes scent). Because of it’s position in the brain, the olfactory bulb has easy access to the hippocampus, which is responsible for creating long-term memories, and the amygdala, which is the emotional center of the brain.

What researchers concluded from these studies is that aromatherapy stimulates the creation of new cells in the memory center of the brain. The creation of these new cells improves the higher functions of the brain, such as memory recall and abstract thinking.

So how can you use aromatherapy to benefit your own mind? There are a number of different scents you can use to boost your brainpower, and a variety of ways to use them. Your best choice would be the essential oils used in these studies that generated the greatest results like peppermint, rosemary, and lemon. The best time to use them is right before you need to focus on something, like at the start of your work day, or right before you do something that you want to remember well, like the beginning of a study session or lesson or even at the start of a movie if you have trouble remembering scenes.

If you have any of these essential oils on hand, you can mix 70-75 drops of one (or a blend) of the oils with 3 oz (or 80 ML) of purified water inside of a spray mister bottle (a 3% dilution). Shake the bottle to make sure the oils are evenly mixed then spray in the air and inhale deeply whenever you need to. For faster and more direct results you can inhale the essential oil or blend (undiluted) directly from the bottle. If you are blending oils be sure to place the oils into a dark glass bottle, and don’t overdo or over-use this method as it can sometimes result in the opposite effect of the intended or desired result.

Some of these scents can be obtained directly from the natural ingredients themselves only in a much less concentrated form. For example, you can grow fresh mint in your garden, kitchen, or on your desk and use it to make tea or crush some leaves to release their scent. Or you can throw the peel and rinds of some oranges, lemons, and/or limes into your garbage disposer and run it for a few seconds to grind the fruit and release it’s natural scent.

There’s Nothing Like a Good Camping Trip to Get Back in Touch With Nature

There’s nothing like a good camping trip to get back in touch with nature –especially during the hot summer months when a trip to the mountains can provide a breath of much needed fresh air! I can picture it now –setting up camp in the shade of the trees, going for a refreshing swim in the local lake or river, taking a canoe or kayak out for a spin, or sitting around the campfire.

campground signOf course camping these days looks a lot different than it did when I was a child! When you spend time in the splendor of majestic Redwood or Sequoia trees like the kind you find in the California mountains, it’s hard to imagine hauling in all the stuff that was a necessary part of the camping experience back then. Sometimes you want to camp in a designated campground with facilities and hook ups, which obviously makes it easier for a family style vacation. But sometimes you want to go deeper into the woods, get away from it all and “rough it” a little so you can experience a true communion with Mother Nature. If you are an experienced backpacker then you already know how critical it is to pack light and bring items that are multipurpose and/or re-usable no matter where you go.

Whichever way your pleasure tends, there are ways to camp without altering or harming the ecological landscape of your chosen campsite. Whether it involves using the latest, coolest gadgets and gear, or just some old fashioned common sense, we are all stewards of the environment and have a responsibility to enjoy it and share it with others (including it’s natural inhabitants) without spoiling it.

Of course greening any camping trip or vacation starts at home before you leave and while you are away. For more on this see my previous blog post. Once you’ve ensured that your home will operate in a sustainable, non-wasteful way while you’re gone you can plan your out door adventure accordingly.

What do you do to green your camping? Do you have any green camping tips or wisdom you’d like to share? I’d love to hear what other people are doing in this area. Please post about your recent camping experiences or camping gear you’ve acquired that makes your outdoor adventures sustainable and eco-friendly. Thanks!

Green Camping Essentials: 4 Simple Ways to Enjoy Nature and Minimize Your Footprint

As busy as our lives are these days, even something as simple as planning a vacation in the great outdoors can become a source of stress. This goes double if you’re trying to incorporate the green living techniques you use at home while you’re miles away from civilization. Here are four simple ways to minimize your footprint and keep it green any time you go camping.

1. Plug the Energy Drains at Home

One of the easiest things to overlook when preparing to go on any type of vacation is the state your home will be in while you’re away. This is especially important during the summer months when you tend to use air-conditioning and/or watering systems to feed your lawns and gardens on a consistent basis.

Start by unplugging all electronics and appliances that won’t be in use or needed while you’re away. Plugged-in electronics can continue to use energy even when turned off so the only way to stop these energy vampires is to unplug them completely. Ideally, the only things that you should keep powered on are lights to deter burglars, but instead of running them 24/7, put them on a timer so that they only run at night.

Turn your air conditioner off and set your thermostat to 80 or 85 F. This sounds a little hot but you would be amazed how much energy is saved with every 3-5 degrees you turn up the thermostat in the summer. Check the extended forecast to see if there will be any rain or cooling trends and adjust or reduce your timed lawn or garden sprinklers accordingly, to save water.

2. Pack Light, Pack Smart

There’s no getting around it: the more stuff you bring with you when you go camping, the more stuff you’ll either have to leave behind or haul back. Remember, the whole point of camping is to enjoy the outdoors not drag all the creature comforts of home along with you! Try to limit what you bring to the things you know you will really need.

One way to camp in comfort without over-packing is to bring equipment that is either multi-purpose or reusable. For example, a bottle of multi-purpose soap that can clean your dishes, clothes, and skin is a lot easier to carry than a bunch of bottles of shower gel, shampoo, and detergent. Bring along something like Wilderness Wash that’s biodegradable and free of fragrance and other harsh chemicals.

Your silverware and dishes should be reusable, ideally made of aluminum, stainless steel, or BPA-free plastic. Ditch disposable plates and plastic utensils because they create a tremendous amount of waste.

3. Respect the Outdoors

When you camp, be sure to show your love and respect for nature by not causing unnecessary damage to your environment. When you shower or wash your dishes, do so at least 200 feet away from any natural sources of water to prevent the chance of contamination (even when using biodegradable soap). Instead of burying your trash, take it with you and ensure that it is properly disposed of. Stick to well-worn paths and trails when you hike, even if it means taking the long way to your destination –creating shortcuts can cause permanent damage to an area.

Be respectful of animals you encounter along the way, after all, it’s their home you are visiting. If you’re camping in bear country make sure you take the proper steps to conceal your foods because hell hath no wrath like that of a hungry bear! See this site BackCountryAttitude.com for more information on how to bear-proof your campsite.

4. Leave Your Campsite the Way You Found It

“Leave No Trace” is one of the cornerstones of eco-friendly camping. When it’s time to leave, your campgrounds or camping area should look just the way they did when you arrived if not better. It can be tempting to a leave a mark that shows you were there, like a carving in a tree or scratching your name on a rock. These types of activities can cause long-term damage and increase the chance that others will add their mark too –further scarring the land.

Resist the temptation to take home souvenirs. Leave stones, feathers, artifacts, shells, petrified wood, etc. so that others may enjoy them. Take pictures of them instead and use your pictures as mementos of your trip.

If you are not camping in a designated campground, then take your trash (and any trash that other people may have left behind) with you.

Promising Research on Natural Sunscreen Ingredients: Caffeine and Coral Shown to Protect Against UV Damage

If you follow my blog regularly, you already know how I feel about most of the sunscreen sold in stores. I believe that at best, most of the formulas are not as effective at protecting your skin as large companies want you to believe. At worst, they can actually do more harm than good. Thankfully, there has been a push in the scientific community to find a sunscreen that don’t potentially poison the body with synthetic chemicals.

A number of studies conducted within just the last year have found new sources of skin care ingredients. One of the most promising of these studies was done by Rutgers University, where researchers studied the effects of caffeine on cancer caused by UV rays. Though caffeine was already shown to protect against UV-induced cancer when taken orally, this research focused on the topical effects of the famous stimulant.

The Rutgers researchers used mice to determine the effectiveness of caffeine when applied to the skin and found that it reduced the likelihood of cancer by 72%. It appears that caffeine offers similar protection to humans too. Numerous studies have found that regular coffee drinkers had fewer occurrences of skin cancer than those who drank decaf coffee or avoided coffee all together. Great news for habitual coffee drinkers (like me!).

Caffeine isn’t the only thing that researchers have been investigating when looking for new ways to protect the skin. Research done by Dr. Paul Long at King’s College London has focused on coral and how it manages to get all the sunlight it needs to thrive without burning. Because coral needs sunlight for photosynthesis, it must live in shallow water where it is vulnerable to overexposure.

It turns out that algae living within coral reefs create a compound that is transported to the coral. The coral then modifies this compound to create its own sunscreen which protects both the coral and the algae. One of the long-term goals of King’s research is to figure out if this compound can be used to manufacturer sunscreen for human use. Dr. Long sees his research as also having humanitarian potential, saying “If we [can grow this compound] in crop plants have been bred for high yield . . . this could be a way of providing a sustainable nutrient-rich food source, particularly in need for Third World economies.”

If you could buy a sunscreen made from all-natural ingredients instead of the processed, chemical-ridden stuff sold by most companies, wouldn’t you? I know I would! Does the idea of putting coral or even algae on your skin sound too weird? Let us know what you think below.

DIY: All-Natural Sunscreen You Can Make at Home

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all managing to stay safe from the sun this summer without putting anything on your skin that could damage your body. Earlier today I found this video that offers an easy way to make natural sunscreen, with a recipe that you can tweak depending on how much protection you need.  While I’ve shared a number of skin-safe ways to prevent sun damage, it’s hard to beat the all-over protection you can get from natural sunscreen.

If you don’t have time to watch the video, here’s the recipe for natural sunscreen:

84 gr / 6 tbsp of Coconut Oil

28 gr / 2 tbsp of other base oil of your choice (I recommend Jojoba)

28 gr / 2 tbsp of Zinc Oxide (oil-soluble powder form)

14 gr / 3 tsp of Shea Butter

8 gr / 2 tsp of Beeswax

Put all of the ingredients in a double boiler (a mason jar in a pot of water works nicely too) until completely melted, then use a stick blender until all the ingredients combine together and you’re ready to rub it on. Warning: the finished product will make your skin look a little white and pasty but the woman in the video swears by the stuff and uses it on her kids, so there must be something to it!
