The Metal and The Damage Done: Arsenic

No doubt you’ve heard of the movie Arsenic and Old Lace where the dashing Cary Grant plays a character, who discovers that his delusional elderly aunts have been poisoning old lonely bachelors with Arsenic to put them out of their misery!

Clearly, Arsenic in the wrong hands can be used as a deadly poison! But did you know that it’s one of four heavy metals that we ingest, inhale or otherwise are exposed to every day? Scary huh? The other three are Cadmium, Lead and Mercury. I call them the Fearsome Four. When you learn just how much damage they can do to our bodies and our health, you will understand why!

First off, it helps to know why they’re called heavy metals. A metal is considered “heavy” if its gravity is at least 5 times heavier than water. The density of heavy metals increases the probability that they will end up in soil and water, which is why we’re so readily exposed to them. Several factors determine a person’s susceptibility to heavy metal toxicity. Three of the biggest include diet, exposure to pollution and genetic make-up. Although a large percent of metals are excreted from the body through sweat, urine, and the bowels, whatever your body can’t eliminate gets socked away in places that aren’t vital to maintaining life –mainly body fat, teeth, and bones. When heavy metals build up faster than the body can eliminate them you have what’s known as “bioaccumulation”.

There are two types of Arsenic –organic and inorganic. The former occurs naturally in the earth and small amounts are actually necessary for proper bodily function. The latter is a known carcinogen released into the air by burning fuels and coal as well as through widespread use of weed killers and pesticides. The wood industry is one of the biggest contributors to arsenic pollution and has used arsenic to preserve wood since the 1940s. An estimated 90% of wooden play structures, decks and picnic tables are made from arsenic-laced wood. Adults and children can absorb arsenic simply by touching wood treated with it. Other sources of arsenic exposure include herbicides and many foods, including meat, poultry and even wine (arsenic-containing pesticides are often sprayed on wine grapes).

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and the Environmental Working Groups Skin Deep cosmetics database identified Arsenic as a contaminant in about 641 beauty products –approximately 2.5% of all the products listed in the database.

The average person’s body contains about 10 to 20 mg of Arsenic. The good news is that the body efficiently rids itself of this metal. The bad news is that chronic exposure to low levels of arsenic can create problems for all your organ systems and is strongly linked to lung and skin cancer.

To lower your exposure to Arsenic:

  • Eat organic, pesticide-free fruits and vegetables
  • Avoid insecticides and weed-killers (if you have to spray avoid products containing lead arsenate)
  • Keep children away from wood treated with chemicals
  • Avoid eating food directly off picnic tables or food that has come in direct contact with picnic tables Consider replacing treated wood in and around your home with newer, non-toxic alternatives like bamboo.

And as an added measure for protection, add more Vitamin C to your diet.

Kitchen Table Wisdom: Use Natural Green Cleaning Supplies in Your Home Part 2

As I promised in my last post, here are the other 3 of 6 suggestions for using commonly found ingredients in your kitchen to create your own green and natural cleaning products and solutions. These were excerpted from an article in the April 2009 issue of Real Simple magazine. Borax
A water softener that when added to laundry, makes detergents more effective. It’s also alkaline so it’s effective at killing mold and fungus. Pour it into your toilet bowl, swish it around then let it sit overnight before flushing. Add it to dishwater to soak and clean your china (including hand painted china), and sprinkle it on the bottom of your dishwasher and let it sit overnight to deodorize it.

Vinegar
Because of its acidity, this common kitchen ingredient can wipe out tarnish, soap scum, mineral deposits as well as dirt and grease. Pour equal parts vinegar and water and run it through the brew cycle in your coffee machine. Halfway through turn the power off for about an hour then resume. When done, run several cycles with clean water. Use it straight to clean drains (flush afterwards with cold water). Spray it directly onto walls to kill mold (rinse after 15 minutes and let dry). Use a 50/50 mixture with water to clean mineral deposits in your steam iron. Add a 1/4 cup to a bucket of warm water to clean almost any type of floor (except marble and wood). Mix 1/4 cup with 2 cups of water and a squirt of castile soap in a spray bottle and use as a window or glass cleaner (for best results wipe off with newspaper).

Baking & Washing Soda
Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda) and its cousin Sodium Carbonate (washing soda) are hardworking cleaners that effortlessly cut through grease and grime. Washing soda is stronger and can’t be ingested. Use washing soda for tough jobs like cleaning barbecue utensils, stove burners, and even removing tough stains from garage floors or other concrete surfaces. You can sprinkle the washing soda directly onto the concrete and sprinkle a little water to form a paste then let it stand overnight, scrub and hose down or wipe clean. For stove burners, soak them overnight in a mixture of 1/2 cup washing soda and 1 gallon of warm water, then clean as usual. For stained tea cups and coffee mugs use a mixture of 1 part baking soda to 2 parts water and soak for 30 minutes before washing them.

Kitchen Table Wisdom: Use Natural Green Cleaning Supplies in Your Home Part 1

Sometimes I wonder if the effort it takes to find a good green cleaner or variety of cleaners is worth the investment of time and money when there are so many safe and natural ingredients that are probably already in your kitchen (or certainly widely available for a low cost) you could use to make your own green cleaning solutions. Below 3 of 6 suggestions taken from an article in the April 2009 issue of Real Simple magazine. Check back in a few days for the other three as well as additional resources.

Lemons
The acid in lemon juice removes dirt and rust stains and works especially well as a scouring paste when mixed with table salt. Use it to clean stainless steel countertops by dipping a lemon half in baking soda and running it across the surface (then wiping clean); increase the grease-cutting power of your dishwashing liquid by adding a teaspoon of lemon juice to it; deodorize your garbage disposer by cutting a lemon in half and running it through the disposer; clean stains out of grout by adding a little juice to a teaspoon of cream of tartar to make a paste and use a toothbrush to scrub it out; or brighten your laundry whites when you add a 1/2 cup of lemon juice to the rinse cycle.

Liquid Castile Soap
This gentle, plant-based liquid soap is great as a natural body wash and because of it’s ability to loosen grime and dirt from surfaces, it can do double duty as an effective floor and surface cleaner too. Combine 1/4 cup (i.e. 2 oz) of liquid castile with a gallon of warm water and use it to wash your car, or mop your floors (if the floors are greasy you can add 1/4 cup of distilled white vinegar and a couple of drops of orange essential oil to the mix). You can also use it to clean leather upholstery (add two drops of soap to a quart of warm water). Combine 1 tablespoon of soap with 1/3 cup of baking soda and go to town on your sinks, showers, tubs, and ceramic tiles.

Cooking/Vegetable Oils
You probably never considered that the same oils you cook with can be used as furniture or even shoe polish! Plant-based oils like olive and safflower dislodge dirt, diminish scratches and bring new life and luster to wood that has aged or dried out from exposure to the sun. Make your own polish by mixing 2 cups olive or vegetable oil with the juice of 1 lemon. Use it to keep rattan and wicker furniture from drying or cracking. You can even use it to clean cast iron cookware by making a paste with vegetable oil and a teaspoon of coarse salt to remove cooked-on debris. And a little vegetable oil can help remove paint or stubborn glue from your hands (Jojoba oil is especially good for this, though a lot more expensive).

The Safest Green Cleaning Option: Homemade Solutions

If you want to take your all natural, earth friendly cleaning a step further, you can easily make your own green cleaning supplies at home. This way, you can also lessen the environmental impact on your local landfill by leaving the plastic containers at the store and not in your garbage can.

If you happen to own an LCD television or a computer monitor, you’ve probably discovered that cleaners like Windex are useless for getting your screen streak free. However, did you know that a simple solution of one part white vinegar and one part water will get your screen looking as good as new? If you add in one part rubbing alcohol to that solution, then you have a safe and effective cleaner for your windows and mirrors. Not only does this solution work just as well as chemical-based cleaners, it’s simple to make and costs a fraction of store-bought cleaners.

You’ve probably wondered what chemicals are hiding in that bottle of Drano or Liquid Plummer but didn’t think there were any other options for unclogging your drains. If you were one of those kids who made a volcano at home for a class project or a science fair, you may want to try this experiment. Simply pour two tablespoons of baking soda into your drain and then add vinegar and stand back. Wait a few moments, add some warm water to see if the clog is removed.

Furniture polish is another one of those items that many of us can’t imagine living without. What looks better than a freshly dusted and polished table? There is an all natural alternative to those nasty aerosol wax polishes. Start with one part olive oil, one part vinegar and then add in a teaspoon or two of lemon juice. Transfer this mixture to a spray bottle and you have the cheapest and most effective furniture polish ever. Liquid wax jojoba is also a good choice (though pricey for cleaning -I personally would save that for your skin care needs). All natural lemon oil may also be an excellent solution to the problem.

Selecting green cleaning products for your home often comes down to simple common sense and questioning the beliefs you may have come to accept as truths handed down to us from generations of advertising and marketing campaigns. These campaigns have set the standard for cleanliness in our minds based on the notion that harsh detergents and chemicals are the only way to effectively get the job done. Try a kinder, gentler approach and see for yourself.

Two Common Product Label Claims That Might Indicate Greenwashing

Here’s a summary of some of the claims you should look out for when evaluating a product that is packaged in a way that makes it appear to be either “Natural” “Eco-Friendly” or “Green”:

  • Natural Claims

    This is the most common and the most nebulous of claims on personal care products. Since there are no regulatory standards here, you have to educate yourself as much as possible on the difference between natural and not-so-natural ingredients to decipher the claims. The main things to consider are a company or brand’s track record, and hidden trade-offs with respect to the product’s ingredients.

    The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database enables you to see how both companies and their individual products rank in terms of health and safety. Products with higher rankings (i.e. 7-10) generally contain a higher amount of potentially toxic chemicals and questionable ingredients. Companies whose products rank in the middle to high range should be scrutinized more carefully. Their claims of being “natural” likely involve trade-offs –meaning they may contain natural ingredients but they also contain harmful ingredients. Keep in mind that the term “natural” does not speak directly to the environmental benefits of the product or the manufacturer’s environmental practices.

  • Free From Claims

    Beware of “free from” claims –ones that tend to emphasize what’s not in the product at the expense of what is. These can be highly misleading because they either imply that the free from ingredient is in some way undesirable when that may not be the case, or worse, the free from ingredient is one that has no relevance to either the safety of the product or its environmental impact. These types of claims can also be another way of re-directing attention from the hidden trade-offs mentioned earlier. And oftentimes, there’s no way to verify the legitimacy of the claim.

    For example, a company that makes scented products using “fragrance” may put a “free from phthalates” claim on its label. Since the term “fragrance” is not regulated, how can you know that this claim is true? What proof is being offered to validate the claim either on the label or elsewhere? In this example the only way you can judge is if the product is still scented with “fragrance” as opposed to pure essential oils. At the end of the day, you have to know how to read and understand ingredient panels to determine if there are in fact hidden trade-offs that are being masked by the more prominent claims or so-called seals on the product labels.

Greenwashing: How to Decipher Personal Care Product Claims

More than ever before, consumers are clamoring for ‘greener’ products. Their growing and legitimate concerns about the health and safety of their families and the planet are driving this demand for more genuinely “green” and sustainable goods and services.

In its 2009 report “The Seven Sins of Greenwashing,” environmental marketing firm Terrachoice, noted that manufacturers and retailers are stepping up to meet the growing demand for more environmentally safe products. But, as the title of their report suggests, the dark side of this trend, “Greenwashing,” continues to be a concern and possible impediment to wider adoption of greener options due to the mistrust and skepticism it creates.

The term, “Greenwashing” refers to a widely used practice of misleading consumers with deliberately vague or even false claims about the environmental benefits of a product or the environmental practices of the company who produces it. This trend stretches across a variety of industries, but is prominent in the Health and Beauty (HABA) category, where the potential for confusion regarding product claims is probably greatest.

Consider the results of another recent market research study done by The Shelton Group. Their Eco Pulse study on Natural and Organic label claims revealed that a surprising number of Americans (over 50% of those surveyed) erroneously believe that the term “Natural” is regulated by the government and therefore more reliable, while “Organic” is an unregulated, fancy, marketing buzzword slapped on products to justify a higher price point. Of course, this is the opposite of what’s true.

With so many different standards and claims floating around out there, how can you know what to look for in your personal care products to ensure you’re not being “green washed.” Tune in to my next post where I will cover some of the types of claims you might see and how to evaluate them.

Greenwashing: When it Comes to Labels Confusion Reigns!

I recently came across some startling and revealing market research on how American consumers view natural and organic claims on personal care products. It seems that many consumers believe that the term “Natural” is more reliable than the term “Organic.” In fact just over half the participants in this study believed that the terms “100% Natural” or “All Natural Ingredients” were better than “100% Organic” or even “Certified Organic Ingredients.”

Clearly the brand influence of many large companies in the beauty industry puts them in the position to make vague, unsubstantiated, and even misleading product claims when it comes to being natural or green. This unfortunate practice is known as “Greenwashing” and while it continues to persist across various product categories in spite of the phenomenal growth of companies and products that are truly natural and green, it remains disturbingly prevalent in the personal care and cosmetics arena.

At the same time, the lack of regulation around the use of specific marketing claims and reliable standards for natural and organic certification, creates even more confusion which ultimately leads to suspicion and skepticism in the marketplace. This not only slows the rate of adoption (and ultimately the production) of healthier, greener products, it overshadows the importance of organic ingredients in personal care products both from the perspective of consumer health and safety and creating a truly sustainable environment.

Over the next couple of posts, we’ll take a look at some of the common claims that are used and how you can read between the lines so to speak, so you can tell if you’re being “greenwashed.”

Green Your Wardrobe: What Are the Latest Trends?

One of the more interesting developments taking place at the Green Festival over the past couple of years is the phenomenal growth in interest and demand for “green” clothing. The number of booths selling green clothing as steadily grown and for the casual observer attending the festival, it’s obvious the clothing section is one of the most popular among attendees.

So what are these vendors selling that people are clamoring for? Mainly clothes made from renewable resources and natural fibers like hemp and organic cotton, silk, and soy; clothes made from fabrics whose color comes from natural pigments (non-chemical dyes); and clothes that Fair-Trade source.

Most of these clothing companies don’t design clothes that conform to the mass-market notion of what’s fashionable, but instead seek to forge a new notion of fashion that’s built around more casual lifestyles and eco-friendly values.

Greening Your New Year’s Resolutions

The New Year is a time of renewal – looking ahead, visualizing, and anticipating positive changes and developments for our selves in the year to come. This time-honored tradition takes on many forms: new year’s resolutions to lose weight, get fit, stop smoking, find ways to reduce stress in our busy lives; give away or recycle old possessions that have outlived their usefulness; and clear out all manner of clutter to make room for new and better things.

If you’ve resolved to take better care of yourself this year and be healthier, there’s never been a better time to give the medicine cabinet in your bathroom a New Year’s Makeover. I’d like to encourage you to take a closer look at what’s inside yours. Even the most seemingly innocuous items can contain a veritable of soup of chemicals that may be doing you more harm than good.

palmRead the labels and familiarize yourself with the ingredients. Start with the products you use daily – toothpaste, mouthwash, antiperspirants or deodorants, talcum powder, face creams, lotions, and cleansers, over-the-counter cold and pain medications, “anti-bacterial” soaps, and traditional cosmetics. After all, these are products you routinely apply to your skin or your teeth and gums – both the fastest routes for substances to be absorbed into the bloodstream. When substances are absorbed into the body this way they often by-pass the liver – your body’s principle detoxifying organ or worse, clog and congest it. That means many toxic substances aren’t properly eliminated and often take up residence in the fatty tissue of our organs where they build up over time, turning into a virtual “thorn in your side” that can compromise your immune system and leave you susceptible to a host of health problems. A congested liver is also one of the fastest routes to inflammation in the body.

Ironically, many of the chemical ingredients in personal care products are there to improve the texture and consistency, appearance, or shelf-life stability of the product and have no functional purpose. To add insult to injury, many are primarily there to speed up or enhance the penetration of the other ingredients into the skin; increase the thickness and intensity of the lather (making it harder to rinse off); or make the product more visually appealing.

Eliminating products made with ingredients that are at worst, toxic and potentially harmful to your health, and at best, irritants or allergens that do not serve you on your path to more healthful living, will greatly reduce your risk of exposure and may even rid you of persistent unexplained health problems. Coincidentally (or maybe not so coincidentally), many of the ingredients that are harmful to you, are also harmful to the environment, both on the manufacturing and production side and on the back-end as they make their way down toilets and drains and into our riverbeds and streams altering the ecological landscape.

While it may not seem like that big of a deal, transforming your bathroom cabinet is actually a very good first step toward “greening” your lifestyle. If being “greener” is one of your new year’s resolutions then stay tuned as I offer some tips and advice on how to do that over the next week or so.

Soap, Drugs & Rock ‘n’ Roll: How Law Enforcement Can Teach Us the Difference Between Real Soap & Not So Real Soap!

A couple of years ago, my friend David Bronner (president of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps) put together this cute little tongue in cheek video that pokes fun at the notoriously unreliable drug-testing kits that cops use in the field, while revealing their hidden value in determining which soaps are real, honest-to-god soaps, and which ones are really just detergents masquerading as soap!

It was shot at the first Chicago Green Festival in spring of 2007. Check it out. You’ll learn a little bit about the difference in the chemical composition of each type of soap and hopefully get a little chuckle from it all as well!
